Comprehension

Comprehension strategies help people understand and learn more about what’s happening in the text or book.

Predicting and questioning can be used before reading, so people can guess what's going to happen next.

Prior knowledge and inferring can be used during reading. Prior knowledge is using your knowledge of the text to help predicting what's going to happen in the text.

Summarising and making connections can be used after reading so people can see if they understood the whole story.

Knowing how to use the comprehension strategies is important so people can use it during reading.

Reading-Conections

Making connections is when you use text to self, text to text, and text to world.

Text to self means to make another connection with other books. For example The gruffalo is very big and the is scary. Also the book jack and the beanstalk has someone big and scary.

Text to text means to make a connection to yourself. For example the mouse was brave when he scared the other animals away. Also the BFG scares people away.

Text to world means to make a connection with the world . for example the owl took the mouse to his tree top house. In the book Master Crooks theirs old people that kidnaps kids.

Reseprical Reading

This week my group and I found pros and cons of food storage containers by using T-charts and the Reciprocal reading process.

First my group and I chose a container to read about. We read the text and summarised the information to get an idea of what the container was used for.

After reading the text we found the pros and cons of the container using a T-chart.

This is a work in progress that will be finished next week.

Reciprocal reading

Similarities and differences talk about what things are different and same.

The book Dippy Drippers is about messy eaters. The book space food is about a group of kids that learn about how to keep food from rotting in space.

Both The Dippy Drippers  and Space Food is that they are both fiction books and they both talk about food.

The differences about the two books is The Space Food gives information and The Dippy Drippers doesn't.

Similarities can help people find out what is the same and whats the difference.

Explain The Idiom

This week for reading we did a activity called explain the idiom.

We needed to film 3 videos of my group explaining the idiom. First one we did was crack a book. First Xavier Needs to act board and I say crack a book.

Second idiom was tip off. Xavier needed to buy some books and I tipped him off by saying its 100 dollars. tip off means our trying to let the other person lose money.

And the last idiom was second to none. Me and Xavier did a flip on the monkey bars and Xavier won the battle so I said your second to none Xavier. Second to none means that person is the best.

We had to put all our videos on separate slides.

Questioning

I learnt about questioning. Questioning is asking for more information.

For the question, "What are the rules for the test?" I found it right there in the text. I looked on page one for the answer.

I found the think and search question ("What does Bran think of Mara?") on page 4. This is a think and search question because I had to search for the answer.

I found the author and me question: "How does Bran feel when Mara is considering weather to help him?" on page 4 as well. I used my prior knowledge for this question because the answer is not in the book.

For the on my own for the question: "What genre is this story?" I came up with my own answer because it was not in the text.

I really enjoyed reading this book.

Predictions

Predictions means whats going happen next. The book I read was Grandparents day. The link for the book is here.

One prediction was that Granny didn't clean the whole house by her self because she asked the kids for help. This prediction was incorrect.

The second prediction was that Granny didn't go for a walk because she needed to buy the muffins from the bakery. This prediction was incorrect.

My predictions were pretty good. I only got 2 right out of 3.

South Pasific Beats

South Pacific Beats is an article about Rachel Hall's Pato.

The Pato is a modern drum that sounds like the traditional Tongan instrument called the lali. The Pato's body is made from maple hardwood. The pato has a microphone that can be connected to a computer.

Rachael Hall used a milling machine and a lathe to create the Pato.

When Pato is struck, sound waves bounce back and forth inside the hollow chamber creating a full and vibrant sound.
